W: Assalamu'alaikum.
A: Wa'alaikumussalam.
W: Sir, may you help me?
A: Yes, of course.
W: What's the difference between these symbols "—" and "-"?
A: The long symbol "—" is called Dash while the short "-" is called Hyphen.
W: Are they same in function?
A: No. The dash is used like this sample sentence, "I lived in Kentang from 2013—2016". The hyphen is used like this, "The twelve-year-old boy is looking for part-time job". Do you understand?
W: Ooo yes sir, alhamdulillah I know now. But I have one question more about oxford comma. Can you explain that comma?
A: Hmm, about oxford comma. Ok. Please look these two sentences, "I have a wok, dipper, and bolt." and "I have a wok, dipper and bolt.". Can you see the difference? Look carefully!
W: Hmm.. Yes sir, I see. There is a comma before word "and" in the first sentence whereas the second is not.
A: Ok, that's called oxford comma. The oxford comma is an additional comma before word "and" in the last thing mentioned. If there's not a comma before the word "and" so it's called AP style (Associated Press style).
W: Ooh.. Ok sir, thank you very much.
A: My pleasure.
W: Jazakallahu khair.
A: Wa iyyaka jazakallahu khair..
