Parents should be thought to not give
their children a smartphone. There are many bad effects if children already
use smartphone in their age. Here, at least 3 points:
First, using it will affect on how the
children interact with other people. Children will be more focused on the smartphone and it will lessen their interaction with others. Furthermore, it can
lead them to become an individualist.
Childhood is a time when children should learn to socialize verbally and interact with their environment. Senior researcher in Monash Institute Semarang, Muhammad Najib, said children who always play smartphone will have low social sensitivity. Due to feeling enjoyable with their smartphone, not rarely children become anti-social behavior, often be alone, silent, and laughing alone.

Due to feeling enjoyable with their smartphone, not rarely children become anti-social behavior, often be alone, silent, and laughing alone.
Second, children will be addicted to the
smartphone. Mandy Saligari, an addiction therapist from London, stated that "Giving your
child a smartphone is like giving them a gram of cocaine". She added
that young girls in particular believe that sending a picture of themselves
naked to someone on their mobile phone is “normal”, and that it only becomes
“wrong” when a parent or adult finds out.
This addiction to smartphone is because people who are
addicted are free to do whatever they want. Look, how dangerous
this smartphone addiction problem! According to Muhammad Najib, signs of the
children have been addicted are:
1. Cry when their smartphone taken out.
2. Not responding when they called.
3. Decreasing achievement in their school.
In addition, reported by news site Independent (www.independent.co.uk), a ComRes poll of more than 1,000 parents of children aged
under 18, published in September 2015, found 47% of parents said they
thought their children spent too much time in front of screens, with
43% saying this amounts to an emotional dependency. And a report published
by Ofcom found that 64% of children aged 12 to 15 and 65% of parents of
children in that age group said the teenagers’ “screen time” was under
control.
Third, smartphone is really dangerous for
the children’s health because of its radiation. Cris Rowan, a pediatric occupational
therapist, wrote in his article that James McNamee with Health Canada in October of 2011 issued
a cautionary warning stating “Children are more sensitive to a variety of
agents than adults as their brains and immune systems are still developing, so
you can’t say the risk would be equal for a small adult as for a child.” (Globe
and Mail 2011). She also wrote that in May of 2011, the World Health
Organization classified cell phones (and other wireless devices) as a category
2B risk (possible carcinogen) due to radiation emission (WHO 2011).
Lastly, a psychiatrist from
"Accurate" Health Center Medan, Fudin Pang said that 16,000 pounds or
more than 300 million rupiahs is a 28-day "digital detox" charge that
parents must pay in Britain when their children are "addicted" to
gadgets. "Digital detox" is an "addictive" gadget rehab
program designed by Dr. Richard Graham of Capio Nightingale Hospital, London. Not a small fee, is it?
In conclusion even smartphone is very
useful for educational purpose, it is not suitable for the children to have
their own smartphones.
